Essentials: Google paid $1.6 billion in cash and stock for YoutTube, effectively purchasing eyeballs for their previously limited video advertising platform. This confirms Google's intent to enter into other media ad formats than the highly successful text-based search ads. Buying YouTube is a bet they can make video ads work with the experience and user exposure YouTube brings to the table.

Essentials: Officially licensing Luis von Ahn's ESP Game, Google has launched an Image Labeler game that could lead to more accurate search results. Based on a twist of social tagging, and players of the game accumulate points by tagging images with matching tags of other players during 90 second rounds.

Since images are difficult (or impossible) to decipher through machines alone, Google can vastly improve image search with tagging through this game. Success depends heavily upon the usage of the game, and Google has enough of an audience for it to work. Currently, all the top 5 players have earned over a million points each.

Essentials: Few details are confirmed by the search giant, which yields speculation and many assume the most elaborate use of facial recognition technology recently acquired by Google. Terms of the acquisition are not disclosed enough to know which patents held by Neven Vision are now Google property.

Instead of pulling up a screenshot of the destination page, the blog search pulls together recent posts in a window dialog with the text. You can begin reading prior to subscribing, and subscribing is simple.

Essentials: This announcement means that bloggers can extend their already considerable new influence over newsworthy topics by getting much faster exposure from Technorati directly through the AP. Initially, the "Top Five Most Blogged About" will appear alongside AP releases. Another feature where bloggers can be more proactive is linking your entry to a release by the AP and be included in "Who's Blogging" when users view the article. You can see the "Who's Blogging" in action at The Washington Post.

Essentials: A 26 year old search innovator with an engine called Orion has been hired by Google. The engine created by Ori Allon generates search results that contain snippets of text from matching pages, including additional snippets of related matches automatically. Other search engines (and some businesses) have expressed interest in Orion. The search results are intended to resolve the query in such a way that the searcher either gets enhanced references to pages with related matches, or snippet text in results is adequate and the need to click is reduced.
