Essentials: Partly resolving a major issue for the search marketing community, Google via Webmaster Central now supplies verified webmasters with truer backlink reference reporting. Danny has an excellent post up about how it works, and if you've verified to Google's Webmaster Central, you will now have access to much more backlink info than available before.

Webmasters long wished for Google to report this information, which to those in the search marketing community find invaluable. As a practitioner, you have greater incentive now to recommend that your clients sign up for - and verify - for Google Webmaster Central aka Sitemaps. They can export data for your review, or you may even have permission to access it directly.

Essentials: More than 50 newspapers signed up to allow Google to start selling ad space in print. The announcement came Monday just as the Tribune Company had a LA Times executive resign rather than begin cutbacks involving employees. This news comes at a difficult time for major newspapers that have seen a sharp decline in advertising revenue in face of increasing competition from the online channel that the Google advertising platform exemplifies.

The deal allows the bidding structure to hold auctions for space but with restrictions where the paper can specify a minimum cost and retain editorial rights to reject inappropriate advertising sales. During this test, Google will not collect any revenue in the transactions so that it can test and hone in on developing a working model for advertising sales where it intends to collect a revenue share starting next year.

This deal represents a terrible turn for newspapers showing their weakness against stiff competition for advertising dollars given the lively online marketing channel. Major advertisers will build relationships with distribution for print through Google rather than seeking newspaper representatives for the media buy. The ultimate result will likely be more erosion of newspaper profits albeit slowed by the opportunity to collect through Google and initially reach a new set of small advertisers.

Essentials: Google is now worth more than IBM (on paper) making it the third loftiest technology company breathing down the neck of Cisco in second place and Microsoft at the top. HP, Yahoo!, Intel, eBay and Amazon were left behind in the dust. Google stock is trading at stratospheric levels which is why the valuation is so high.

Essentials: Just in time for the American Halloween, reportedly a former CIA employee with remaining contacts at the agency also has contacts at Google. Apparently, the brief stint Matt Cutts had as an intern with the NSA led to much more than many of us thought at first.

Don't buy into that nonsense unless you it's in your nature to lean towards paranoia. This would therefore comes as no surprise to you. We just think Spooks at Google is the perfect story for Halloween. We think the CIA must be helping them defend against defacement with "Hacked by Chinese" or something.

Happy Halloween!

Essentials: There are lots of stories about the earnings report from Google showing a huge lift over last year with a whopping 70 percent increase of revenue. The numbers beat most estimates even the rosy ones. Comments from some Wall Street investors are that they are glad the Google company has not "rested on its laurels" after having gone public and trading on the exchange.

Being generally enamored with watching the GOOG ticker, investors were treated to Google stock soaring on the news after the $1.6 billion acquisition of YouTube. Google company valuation was raised by some $4 billion on that news alone. What's true is, this is all just paper valuation, and anything can happen to quickly change the mood. For now though, there's ether in the air around Mountain View.

Essentials: Time Warner, parent company of AOL, has been in negotiations with YouTube over video material copyright issues and hadn't reached agreement by the time Google bought YouTube. It is fair to say that the negotiations will now continue and include Google, even while agreement for distribution and part ownership in AOL by Google adds further complexity to the discussion. With Google ownership of YouTube, the circumstances have changed substantially from when YouTube did not have the capital to pay Time Warner and settle copyright issues.

Essentials: After a rocky start, that included Senator McCain commenting on Sergey Brin's move to influence Washington, Google has now formerly formed Net PAC. This allows them to donate and actually influence members of the government. Key issues for Google will be Net Neutrality and staving off further harsh criticisms about their acquiescence to the Chinese government.

Essentials: Google, also in court to fight against copyright complaints by Agence France Presse, lost a key battle today in their fight to provide news search. The argument from Google that the ruling attacks the fundamental way in which Google does business is from an American legal perspective; that an entity should not be blocked from being able to conduct business.

The note that there is implication Google may not be allowed to crawl without permission first must have been drawn by the author of the article because that is exactly true. Ignoring an exclusion protocol and crawling away can constitute trespassing!

Essentials: Late last year, Google announced a download for a Beta software campaign manager that would allow users to manage AdWords offline and synchronize when connected. It follows that a software maker with a large install base could strike up a deal and Intuit did just that with Quickbooks.

Users of the newly released Quickbooks 2007 will be able to manage their AdWords campaign directly from within the software, and upload local conact information to populate Google Maps (Local).

There are additional integration facilities for users with Google Desktop, where Quickbooks data can be accessed and searched right from the desktop.

Essentials: Google Base, fast replacing reference to Froogle, has new data views that allow publishers to see impressions and clicks which Google has collected on Base usage since June. This is a welcome change that can lead to valuable optimization steps.
