==> PubCon Las Vegas

Hello everyone,

Upon reflection of sessions I either attended or moderated at
PubCon in Las Vegas, I had the most fun in two particular
sessions. There was one session where I was asked to fill in for
the moderator that was unable to make it to Las Vegas. This was
the session on Paid Links.

I noticed Matt Cutts from Google was at the back of the room, and
while the panel primarily consisted of vendors that sold or
promoted paid links, our discussion ended up very lively. The
folks that joined us who operate in the arena may have promoted
paid links and the lively discussion essentially challenged them
and their notion of what may or may not work for future rankings.
I even had the chance to mention Eric Ward once or twice, who was
not at the event.

The audience seemed to listen. In fact, after the panel, Matt
and I had the chance to briefly catch up. He mentioned that he
found it interesting that the audience seemed to shift or change
course from the fixation on paid links and their value as
compared with naturally obtained links. I

At a subsequent 'site review' session in which Matt was on stage,
an audience member subjected their own site to comments from the
panel. One of the panelists noticed a huge number of inbound
links from what looked like sources of paid links. In fact the
number was 197,000 inbound links as reported by Google.

Matt, using VPN, surfed into Google's network (without showing
the audience his screen) to come up with the internal number of
links the site was actually being credited for towards rankings.
The number? Three links. Only one link was much good at all.

So, when it comes to paying for links, this site owner may be
paying a substantial amount regularly to maintain and gain
inbound links for his site in the hopes that he will rank better
in Google. The result, unfortunately, is not good at all. And
the problem is, many of the links sit alongside poor quality
sites which pretty much make such links useless and potentially
inhibit future rankings.

Also, I had the chance towards the end of the conference on my
last panel to revisit the rankings report issue on stage. In an
upcoming session in January, I intend to bring it up on stage
once again. I encourage you to revisit SearchReturn issues that
discuss ranking reports and think a little about the amount of
time you may be spending on ranking reports. I hope to continue
the discussion in a meaningful way in future issues of
SearchReturn and from the stage at upcoming events.

If you want to engage today, make sure to surf in to
www.searchmarketingnow.com and attend a webcast I will be giving
at 1pm EST. Registration is free, and the webcast will be
recorded in case you miss it. If you get the chance to attend
live, you can submit questions and engage. Have fun!

Stay tuned,
