// -- SEARCHRETURN / ERIC WARD LINK BUILDING Q&A -- //

-----------------------------------------------------------------

From: Will Bontrager

Assuming, and I realize this is a large leap because I am so not
an SEO expert, linking back and forth between links pages has
little good effect, would 3- or more-way linking have a better
effect on SERPS listings?

I'm thinking:
example1.com -> example2.com
example2.com -> example3.com
example3.com -> example1.com

ERIC'S ANSWER

Answer: Given my conservative nature and white hat
vigilance, I have to answer first by saying any sort of geometric
or non-linear linking approach done only to improve SERPs is not
a good idea. Google can make a billion calculations a second, so
we shouldn't believe we can out fox them with triangulated
linking pattern. If we could, every SERP would be useless.

I had a client who wanted to take the non-linear linking approach
to the extreme. He owned 100+ sites, and had written a
randomizer linking script that would create the most natural
looking interlinking across all his sites. The one problem with
his approach was that even though he tried to mingle in other
links for sites he did not own, when looked at as a whole, he had
created what Mike Grehan so aptly calls a spam island.

In my opinion, no matter how hard you try, if you control all the
sites you are interlinking, you are going to leave a signal
somewhere, somehow, that is going to send a signal of negative
trust. A friend of mine owns 20 houses here in Knoxville, many
in different neighborhoods and of different sizes, age, and
design. There is nothing about these houses that is similar to
another house. They each stand on their own. You would have no
idea he controlled all these houses. Except for a couple things.

He uses the same lawn guy to cut each yard. He's used the same
style of mailbox for each one. He's put a few cherry trees in
each yard. These are all minor details that nobody would ever
notice, unless you look out at every one of these houses for a
while with an eye for common traits.

I know this is not a perfect analogy, however in like manner the
algorithms of a search engine can see things that you and I
simply can't.
