==> Ask CEO Hired By Microsoft

http://battellemedia.com/archives/002515.php

Essentials: The former CEO of Ask, Steven Berkowitz, has been
tapped by Microsoft to assist their search effort. This news
arrived Friday so the weekend had a chance to minimize media
fallout. There was speculation about who will fill Steve's shoes,
and Jim Lanzone appears to have been identified for taking up the
reins at Ask. John Battelle has an interview with Jim Lanzone, in
which he discloses how Ask will continue its path.

==> Yahoo! Update

http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000294.html

Essentials: Yahoo! updated its index last week. If you haven't
looked at your Yahoo! rankings in a while, now would be a good
time to check for changes. Yahoo! also mentions that improvements
to the indexing system have caused frequent changes recently.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

==> Google Cache Proxy Explained

http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/crawl-caching-proxy/

Essentials: After the news broke about Google's Mediabot
supplementing the cache crawl, Matt Cutts clears the air and
posts about how it works. It rolled out with the recent BigDaddy
update, and is intended to save bandwidth. Google crawlers also
may make better use of gzip encoding, a compression algorithm for
HTTP that supporting (browser) software can automatically deflate
on the client-side after transfer. These changes save bandwidth.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

==> Online Advertising Growth

http://news.com.com/2100-1024_3-6063323.html

Essentials: Online advertising increased by 30% in 2005 according
to the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Search marketing captured
41% of the advertising dollars spent online, the largest share of
the revenue pie. Growth is expected to continue throughout 2006.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

==> TrueLocal Traffic Estimator

https://www.truelocal.com/press/release/20060426a.htm

Essentials: Look for a release tomorrow that TrueLocal has
launched a traffic estimator. Advertisers can use a zip-code and
search term combination for information about TrueLocal traffic
from the previous month. Included is map clicks, (including
driving directions), listing views and phone calls in relation to
the most popular categories and the nearest zip-codes matching
the query.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

==> SMA-NA Launches New Design

http://www.sma-na.org

Essentials: The Search Engine Marketing Association started life
in reaction to the American focus of SEMPO, and wants to be more
inclusive of nations worldwide. The North American division of the
group has a new logo design and fresh website after more than a
year online. "The new SMA-NA website has been designed as a portal
to resources, news and information; it reflects our commitment and
support of individuals working in the field of search engine
marketing."
