Amen. When I first started doing this, Google didn't exist, and
Larry and Sergey hadn't even applied to Stanford yet. They were
teenagers. The challenge is being forceful with clients to help
educate them as to the non-SEO benefits of link building,
publicity, and online marketing. I ask every client who suggests
a specific tactic this question: Is your primary reason for
wanting to do this because you think YAG (YahooAltaVistaGoogle)
will reward you for it? If they answer yes, I suggest some couch
time.
