==> Google Must Comply

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/03/14/google.hearing.ap/

Essentials: The judge, wary of harming the search giant, still
requires Google to turn over a diminished count of records. Not
willing to make a ruling that would give search users pause
before entering queries, the judge is specifically concerned
about forcing Google to surrender search terms. The legal
arguments in this case favor the DOJ. However Google, (and all
major search engines), would be harmed if users thought their
queries might be subject to government surveillance. Diminished
record counts are seen as the compromise. It remains unclear how
the ACLU will respond. They may request records in turn now that
the judge has given the government a veritable victory against
Google.

==> Search From Desktop View

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/03/stay-in-ctrl-ctrl.html

Essentials: A new shortcut for Google Desktop search, which is no
longer considered beta, will open a search field on your desktop
view which puts Google in valuable screen real estate. Microsoft
has a history of steadfastly controlling OEM desktop views for
new Windows machines only allowing favorable icons. This was
known as "sand-trapping" newbie users into services run by
Microsoft (or subservient partners). The DOJ now has rules to
limit Microsoft on some ways, and Google's move potentially
inserts Google into the most valuable real estate of the screen.
OEMs can choose to ship with Google Desktop Search previously
installed, making Google immediately available.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

==> Google Payment System

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060315-103809

Essentials: Google Base is the first area that will allow people
to make and accept online payment through Google Payments. This
represents a threat to a number of firms, most notably eBay
(owner of PayPal). The system reportedly accepts mostly all forms
of payment except PayPal. Barry Schwartz is testing the system
and provides screenshots and a rundown of the first rendition.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

==> Impression Fraud

http://www.searchreturn.com/digest/refs046.shtml

Essentials: Google is not the only advertising platform that uses
an ad ranking system based on CTR. MSN uses it, and Yahoo! has
plans to offer it later this year. Impression fraud, an esoteric
blackhat move, gains mainstream press for the first time. The
idea behind impression fraud is to prepare ads, holding them on
pause, then flooding your keyword buys with false impressions.
Your competitors CTRs will quickly drop. Once you release your
ads shortly after, it can cost you less for your desired rank,
and will be easier to obtain higher positions that you want. It
can also be hidden from being detected with near absolute
anonymity, and is just about impossible to thwart against.

==> New SEMPO Board

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060314-092502

Essentials: Congratulations to the newly elected SEMPO board.
