==> SES NY
We are going to attend the NYC Search Engine Strategies show next
week. There will be a lot of real-time coverage of the show that
we recommend. Check Search Engine Watch Forums and the Official
Blog. You can find also find what has become a tradition of
covering the show at SERoundtable. Lee Odden can also usually be
found blogging directly from conferences, and some of you should
recognize his posting activity in SearchReturn.
If you are a high-speed user, and want to tune in to interviews
and other comprehensive coverage, WebmasterRadio.fm has a show
that covers major events including the Search Engine Strategies
series. They usually organize fun stuff too, like the Buddy Guy
Legends search engine night in Chicago. What a gas that was. They
will be in New York to capture the sound spirit of the show.

We will be lucky if we get an issue or two out next week. For
your everlasting patience with us, we will reward you with a
conference recap of the panels Disa Johnson moderates. The
schedule is really busy and we know panelists lurk SearchReturn.
If you get the chance to visit a panel Disa moderates, please
drop by to say hello. We always look forward to hearing from you!

==> Google Image & Copyright Law
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4742382.stm
Essentials: When Google Image Search displays copyright protected
material, it may constitute infringement. Perfect 10 (adult site)
argued that Google's thumbnails impair their ability to sell the
images themselves to small screen device users. The court agreed.
Key to the case, is the issue of thumbnails, that normally reduce
the quality of most copyright protected multimedia. In this case,
the thumbnails were exactly one of the things Perfect 10 sells.

==> Digital Envoy Loses Its Case
http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060214-085100
Essentials: Google deploys IP technology by Digital Envoy to
track where users are physically located when connecting to
Google sites. The arrangement was $8,000 in monthly fees, and a
contract that says only Google owned properties can use the
technology. The spirit of the agreement did not really concern
Google using the technology to track where AdSense websites or
their users are located. Digital Envoy wanted to renegotiate the
contract to include these other sites in fees. Google countered
by offering $4,000 more in fees, which is far lower than what
Digital Envoy would get even with a blanket license.
The contractual terms, as Digital Envoy saw them, were hard to
enforce since the technology actually *is* located on machines
hosted in Mountain View by Google owned domains. The laguage in
the contract lost the case for Digital Envoy in court. Google may
be a little guilty of using a technicality to stiff a vendor out
of fees that were understood to be included in the spirit of the
agreement. Google was using the technology in a way that Digital
Envoy did not foresee. The two companies will probably continue
to have a client & vendor relationship regardless.
